Announcing My Phoenix Fiction Writers Anthology Story

I have amazing news, people.

Seven of us Phoenix Fiction Writers have come together to create the greatest anthology known to humankind:

Seven short stories.
All speculative fiction.
All featuring antiheroes.

This anthology is creatively titled Antiheroes: A Phoenix Fiction Writers Anthology. E.B. Dawson, Beth Wangler, J.E. Purrazzi, Nate Philbrick, K.L.+ Pierce, Kyle Robert Shultz, and I are all contributing one story apiece.

Honestly, the only way this anthology could possibly get any better is if Batman were one of the authors. But I like to think that, collectively, we Phoenix Fiction Writers have all of the awesomeness of the Dark Knight, so it's all good.

You can (and should) add the story to your Goodreads list

So what short story am I contributing to this anthology? Good question. Get ready to be blown away.

My antihero story is a Christian Fantasy featuring vampire-ish characters and a culture inspired by the Aztecs and Mayans. Behold:

Blood for blood. Life for life. These are the rules that hold Ishtaka’s life together. In a society where people require blood to survive, it is her duty as a Blood Hunter to kill and drain criminals that the Guild have deemed guilty. It is through this work that Ishtaka can supply food for her people, thus saving them from starvation, insanity, and death.

But the blood that she earns is never enough to gain forgiveness for her past crimes or peace from her nightmares. Unable to free herself from her guilt, she lives according to the only logic that she knows: Pay for blood spilled with blood gained. Earn absolution for lives taken by giving life to others.

But this system is not to be trusted. When she unearths a massive, carefully-kept lie surrounding the Guild, Ishtaka struggles to find truth and forgiveness in a world built on vengeance and blood.

Vengeance Hunter is unlike my previous publications. It is not YA, meaning it does not feature coming-of-age themes or a teenage main character. This story is also quite a bit darker and more intense than my other ones, so it will be a unique experience. However, like my previous works, Vengeance Hunter is character and theme driven, and also features a distinct culture and epic world-building. I'm quite proud of it and am excited to share with you all.

To make things even more exciting, Vengeance Hunter is part of my expanded universe, meaning that this story takes place in the same universe as Skies of Dripping Gold and The Terebinth Tree Chronicles. There is one subtle easter egg and one not-so-subtle one, so you'll have to see if you can catch them both.

  1. Antiheroes sounds like it's going to be awesome! Can't wait to read it!
As for my favorite vampire movie, I can't really say that I have one, but my favorite vampire(ish) book is DEFINITELY Carry On by Rainbow Rowell :)

    1. Yay! Thank you!

And ooooo. I'll have to look that one up. I have yet to read anything by Rainbow Rowell.

  2. Ooh, this sounds so good! I love vampires in theory, but I've never seen them done in a satisfactory way. I'm really curious to see your take (but also very scared... please don't hurt me).

    1. Lol! Right? Vampires have so much potential, but often are just reduced to creepy, broody, sparkly things (*cough* Twilight *cough* *cough*). I hope you enjoy my take on things! =D
